Happy New Year!

2009 has just arrived and I'm sure everyone is recovering from the flurry of activity over the Holiday Season. We hope, like ours, your Christmas and New Year celebrations were filled with the important things in life: family, friends and enjoyment together.

While we are looking at packing up 2008, finalizing all the details for the IRS, CPA, and bookkeeper, we can't forget to set our goals for 2009.

So today, we would like to tell you of just a couple of our goals for the New Year, and why we prefer those to “making resolutions”.

Why Resolutions Don't Work

While this is the point in the year most people encourage each other to look back and find something they should change, it just doesn't happen. Sure, you make honest promises, but they are shallow at best. And the reason is simple, really. Resolutions won't work because they are focused on the negative.

Think about it. When you think of setting a resolution, you try to find something that has been a problem for you in the past year. Then you make a verbal decision to change that problem. Maybe it's to lose weight, stop smoking, get the bills paid on time, or buy the model you've been wanting forever. It doesn't really matter what the problem is, the point is that making a “resolution” won't fix the problem.

The reason is a simple one. It is because your focus is on the problem, not the solution of not doing [fill in the blank here] any more. And the resolution only lasts for a month or two and then it is gone and forgotten. There is no plan or accountability to support the resolution. And you look back and think, “I still have X problem” and you feel you have failed.

However, if you set a Goal for 2009, that changes things. The focus is on the creative part of your mind. You search out solutions and you develop ways to accomplish your goal. You stay focused on the positive, not the negative.

To encourage the accomplishment of your goals, you need to talk about them in a positive way. Find someone who will support you and keep you accountable. Choose a friend who will encourage you. Celebrate every step closer to reaching your goal!

As I am writing this article, I am celebrating the fact that in 6 very short months, we have welcomed 64 people as new readers of The Breyer SpotLight. Our average monthly visits to the website are over one thousand. We have reason to celebrate!

We started in July of 2008 with only 3 visitors to the site each day. Those visitors were actually, Kathy, my son, and me. (My son only because I asked him to.) And six months later - WOW!

Our mission is to help Breyer Horse Collectors of all types with buying, selling, and of course, collecting horse models. That hasn't changed for 2009, our purpose is to provide you with information and tools to enhance the enjoyment of the horse model collecting hobby. But we want to reach more collectors! So to that end our goals for 2009 are:

  • Triple the number of Spotlight eZine subscribers
  • Launch an eBook with a teleseminar in early 2009
  • Find more ways to help collectors build their reputation and make sales.

In order for us to listen closely to each of you, it is vital for you to share your greatest needs with us. This will help us provide the details you are looking for.

What are your goals for 2009? Are they big ones? I hope so! They should be big enough to at least scare you a little. And may I suggest, your first goal - to contact the Breyer SpotLight and tell us what your greatest challenges are and why. You just never know what may happen.

And with that, there are many more announcements coming soon, so keep watching your in-box for updates. We will send you short emails with special announcements about the exciting things happening in the very near future. So stay tuned and start setting your goals!
