Old Mold Appaloosa Proud Arabian Mare

When you hear the term "vintage", an item 25 years old or older automatically comes to mind. Since it is now 2009, that would put the item made in or before 1985. However, when it comes to model horses (and model horse collectors), I think the word "vintage" means something a little different. When a die-hard collector thinks of a vintage model, the old 1950's-1960's models come to mind. The ones with the beautiful paint work and the high-luster gloss. The models that you stare at and just say, "WOW!". The ones that warm your heart with sweet memories of the past.

Thank you for helping to idetify my appy mare. She is a FAM and she has the belly band so I must have gotten her when I was older than 10. Not in the 50's like I thought. The two models certainly are similar, but she is definatly a FAM. Thanks again.

I agree with Bonnie. If the tail is not attached to the left rear leg, it has to be a Family Arabian Mare. The next question is, Does it have a full-blanket (white area from withers to tail), or a "belly-band"? If it is a full-blanket version, then the model is one of the earlier Appy Arabian mares made in 1960 or possibly early 1961. These mares were basically copies of the old mold Proud Arabian Mares. If the model has the "belly-band", it was made later- from 1961 to about 1967. I hope that helps to identify your model, Wayne.

Great question Wayne!
Right now there seems to be many people looking through the diffent toys they grew up with and trying to find out exactly what they are.
I believe the Breyer Model you have is a Family Arabian Mare named Speck and was produced from 1961-1967. However, because I am not an expert in that particular Breyer Model, I think it would be best for Gina herself to answer and provide any kind of details the rest of us are not aware of. Or if anyone else has information as well, feel free. It is the details and unknown variations that can make a difference.
And why not submit a picture with questions about the Arabian Breyer Model you are wondering about?

I saw the picture of the vintage proud arabian mare/ Appaloosa. I thought I had exactly that. A breyer that I recieved in the 50's. But my models tail does not connect to her hock and the right rear leg is not as far forward. So what do I have?

What makes a Vintage Model vintage does depend on more than age. However, I do have to say that even with some of the die hard Collectors of the Vintage Models I have talked to, the "cut off" age varies.
There is nothing set in stone which makes it kind of hard for a new Collector to figure out.
I am sure you can agree, the plastic and the feel of the very first Models made is much different than the ones produced today! And I, like you, are drawn to admire the originals for different reasons than the newer ones.
Once again, it's the Collector who determines what is right for them.
